CHAPTER 12

A sound jolted me out of my sleep. My eyes flew open to the pitch black of the tunnel. A hand clamped over my mouth. “Quiet,” Stella whispered.

My mind went from asleep to wide freaking awake, as it reminded me about our current predicament. I nodded, and she dropped her hand. It was then that I realized what woke me up. It was three women talking. A surge of energy filled me. It was fueled by adrenaline as it dumped into my bloodstream. My eyes adjusted and I could make out the charred corpses to our right. When I looked left, it was initially nothing but darkness. The glow of orange flames flickered in the distance and illuminated three figures walking toward us.

My heart pounded frantically against my rib cage as I thought through our predicament and what to do about it. I feared my creaky bones would give us away if we tried to get up and follow them. I had no idea how long I was asleep but I felt slightly better, so I cast a silencing spell around us so we wouldn’t be heard.

“We’re good," I told Stella as soon as I felt the magic pop in my ears, telling me it snapped into place.

Stella stood up, then extended a hand to help me. “We should follow them. It’s our best chance.”

I rubbed my lower back with a low groan. “Sounds good to me. First, we should stick as close to the wall as possible so they don’t run into us.”

Stella pressed her back against the cement wall. “How the hell do people like Zaleria and Myrna recruit so many to their side? I would never follow such evil women.”

I followed suit and held my breath until I remembered they couldn’t hear us. “I wouldn’t either, but we can’t judge these witches too harshly. If I hadn’t cut out those runes, she would have turned you without your permission. Knowing what she did to you, I can’t help but wonder if she’s taken the same approach with some of them.”

Stella’s expression pinched in her face. “When you say that, you make it hard to hate them. They’re hunting us and going to kill me. That’s difficult to look past.”

I squeezed her hand. “I would agree with you on that. I’m saying something because as much as I want to blast through these witches, I don’t think we should. We should leave them to the prison system.”

Stella sighed. “And we should talk to Tarja about ways we might be able to discover if this was done to them against their will. I would want to be helped if it had happened to me.”

A smile lifted the corners of my mouth. “We will absolutely talk to Tarja. But first we need to get out of here.”

A red ball of fire zipped down the tunnel, making me duck. Stella was next to me. I realized they were looking for the vampires too late to hide the corpses. “Holy shit, they were down here.
